This paper transcribes seven payment letters issued by Corregidor Carlos Vigil de Miranda to teachers in primary schools in various towns within the Lambayeque partido on the northern coast of Peru, between 1768 and 1769. This documentary evidence, found in a notarial record, reveals some educational activity taking place in this area a few years before the arrival of Bishop Baltasar Martínez de Compañón. It is suggested that the educational reforms implemented by the Bishop of Trujillo should be understood, in this case, as a restructuring of educational practices, shifting them from civil to ecclesiastical control.
