This article offers a reflection on the academic trajectory of Catherine Julien within the field of Inca studies, highlighting the influence of the so-called “Rowe school” and the intellectual environment of the Institute of Andean Studies at Berkeley. The author discusses the power dynamics, debates, and rivalries among the main North American schools (Rowe, Zuidema, and Murra), as well as their impact on the German academic community and the training of new generations of Americanists at the University of Bonn. The account emphasizes the importance of maintaining a critical and independent perspective in relation to these traditions, also pointing out the differences in approach and the richness that the diversity of perspectives brings to research on the Andean world and the Incas.
