Notas de Antropología de las Américas (NAA) is the Open Access digital journal of the Department of Anthropology of the Americas of the University of Bonn. Its objective is to generate dialogue around the most recent national and international research in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, history and related disciplines on Latin America. The journal is an initiative created by doctoral students and professors to build bridges between researchers from other regions and to stimulate academic production in the social sciences and the humanities. In times of interconnectivity and large global information flow, the present electronic journal aims at contributing to the digital transmission of knowledge. In this dynamic context of production and reception of new ideas, NAA positions itself within a tradition that emphasizes long-term, holistic and historical perspectives, thereby promoting the discipline of Altamerikanistik without losing sight of the constant changes in Latin American societies today.

We invite authors from the humanities and social sciences to submit unpublished articles for NAA’s fifth issue titled “Ontology and Practice – Interactions, implications and everyday life“.
Manuscripts can be submitted until 28 February, 2026.

The dossier “Andean Ethnohistory: Homage to Catherine Julien,” corresponding to the fourth issue of the journal Notas de Antropología de las Américas, focuses on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the publication of Reading Inca History. We begin with Julien’s contribution to the debate on the reliability of colonial chronicles, understood as vehicles of Hispanic interests, but also as spaces of negotiation in which Inca factions sought to legitimize their authority and preserve their past through dynastic genealogies, oral histories, quipus, and other media. We highlight her proposal for an “antithetical reading” of the chronicles and her articulation of narratives, material records, and memory practices.
